Okay, I am Valerie Kamelka and this is just some picture book ideas to go with stories and then activities to do in Wixie. I'm a media specialist, I teach kindergarten through fifth grade and for 50 minutes a week and these are just some of the ideas and lessons that I've compiled and that I do with kids. A lot of the books are state award books, those where I've gotten the ideas to use these particular books from, I'm in Nebraska, so these were, a lot of them were nominated for our state award.
The first book is Trees Make Perfect Pets. It's a great book around Arbor Day about a little girl, she chooses a tree as her pet. Each of these books in here I've included just what I had as my target.
Most of my targets we use ISTE, so they're most of them are ISTE goals and then these are student examples that were drawn in Wixie that turned out cute. The next book is The Perfectly Perfect Wish about a little girl who catches a wish and she can't decide what to do with her wish and the standard that I used was another Wixie or ISTE standard and I did have recordings of these and then they didn't work so I took screenshots of them but the wish to have a dog, the student had recorded them saying I wish I could have a dog and I wish I could have a cat. This way Charlie, I guess I could presume would be better, this would be Charlie about a blind horse and a little goat who was his kind of sea night dog and they, we were introducing to some stickers and images in Wixie so they were, I don't always let them use stickers so they were allowed to use a sticker for the horse and the goat and then they had to also add drawings to it.
Mel fell as a kingfisher bird who was having a hard time learning to fly and the other birds were cheering for him and the students had to draw something that is hard to learn, add colors to their drawing and then use the text tool to draw and add an onomatopoeia. I try to add some things so I can use it from kindergarten where they might not add text up to fifth grade where they could write an onomatopoeia in there. These are some of the things that were hard to learn, hard to ride a bike, learning to read is hard, when I learned to ride a skateboard, my rule is you're learning so your words don't have to be spelled correctly.
I only have them for such a short time, I don't want to get them caught up on that word is spelled wrong so you can see some of my words in here aren't spelled correctly. On account of the gum is a book about gum getting stuck, she chews gum while she's sleeping and it, along with a lot of other stuff, gets stuck in her hair and so they were allowed to draw some things and learn to use the stickers. We talked about how you resize an image, turn an image and putting those in their hair.
The box turtle is about a little turtle who was born without his shell, a super sweet story about children who are different, animals who are different, and the students were to draw a new shell for Terrence and I used the assign tool in Wixie and, or no, we learned to, sorry, not assign, they were to copy and paste. So we learned how to put a box around the turtle and copy it and paste it so you had four turtles on the page and somebody got ambitious and added five and then they were to draw ideas for four new turtle shells. In the book there's, they go through a lot of different ideas of different shells so they were to add in different turtle shells and I like Terrence has some sunglasses there.
Outside Inside is a book that takes place during the pandemic about people who were working outside during the pandemic and how most of us stayed inside and students. I was doing this with the kindergarten and first graders. I do a lot in Wixie at the beginning of the year just trying to get them to run the mouse correctly.
They were trying to just get pictures put down and they were to draw something they like to do inside during the pandemic and outside during the pandemic. Misunderstood shark is a cute story just about the shark being misunderstood and having everybody look at his loose tooth and we used it as finding some, starting to do some research about sharks. So students went to world book and read some information on some different sharks.
They were to find two facts and I different if they were just in kindergarten I wanted them to get a shark on the page. Up to fifth grade I wanted them to find more facts about the shark and draw those out for me. Sharks can smell blood a mile away, 350 different types of sharks, only 32 of them attack.
So using some different tools in drawing. Lift is a very cute fantasy story about a magic button in an elevator being able to take them anyway. It's a Caldecott winner and the students were using their drawing tools to wear with their magic elevator button and I used the assign tool.
I took a little screenshot of the magic elevator button and then I assigned that to the students and asked them to draw me a picture of where the magic elevator button would take them and I like in Wixie being able to use that assign button and being able to go look at all of those at once. If they went to outer space, they went to the beach and to ancient Egypt. How to catch a clover thief, a silly story between the gopher and the warthog fighting over a patch of clover and the students had to draw something that was important to them that they would protect like he was protecting his patch of clover and then as they age up older use the t tool to type text about what and tell about what they drew.
What is so precious you'd like to protect it, her dog and ps4. I love this story potato pants and I try to do it with a grade level every year. I have had to skip it for a couple years because everybody had read it and just a silly story about the eggplant taking potatoes pants and so students had to design the perfect pair of pants for the potato.
It's a tongue twister and these always turn out great. I don't know why this is just always a hit. Potato mickey mouse overalls, blue and plaid pants.
I always do this one in the fall around Halloween. Do not build a frankenstein. It's a cute book about a boy building a frankenstein and then he keeps following him everywhere and so we talked about how to draw a frankenstein shape and they drew it and then tell about your frankens they had to type about their frankenstein and towards about October in the year I've taught the kids how to use the voice tool so that even the kindergarten and first graders can get their words in there now and add that to it.
The mess we made is another great book to read during this time of the year around Earth Day and we drew about how you what you can do for the earth and use the text tool to tell about it. I used again where I could assign use the assign tool in Wixie and I made a little page said happy Earth Day and put the question on it what can you do to help the earth and I always lock those on the page so the kids can't get rid of them and I love this little picture because of the how he put him in his swim trunks at the river cleaning up the lake. Balloons over Broadway.
There's so many things that are done with this book but because I have them in the media center I always try to do something on the computer and I use again they're creating a balloon for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and I use the assign tool again. I put a picture of New York in the background and then I assign lock that down and assign that to him to draw a balloon on top of the page. What does the anteater eat? Anteater forgets what he eats and he's asking all the animals and different grade levels do research so I used this to introduce research and we use we have World Book and Pebble Go to do research in and this was one of the works they did.
Bats fly at night and use echolocation. Everybody loves the pigeon books so any of the pigeon books we did what you shouldn't let the pigeon do. Do not let the pigeon climb the tree or mow the grass.
I love the kids drawings of pigeons always turn out so good and it's an easy thing to do. The bad seed. Love all those that series of books.
Use the drawing tools and the text tool. I'm a good seed because I help do the dishes. I open doors for my friend and I play with my siblings and I we talked about in this picture when you draw it using the different drawing tools in Wixie the different line tools to get the effects of the lines on the seed.
The very last castle. This is the only book I think I don't have a picture for but we used this I couldn't find a picture of I stop halfway through it and read a prediction of what they think is inside the castle and then we did a makerspace Lego activity after they do finish the book and did their prediction. All are welcome.
Great at the beginning of the story. They introduced themselves. This is one of the girls that told about herself.
Drew a picture and told about her mom and dad. I always try to do different activities at the beginning of the year about themselves. So this was the fourth grade activity.
Agatha May and the anglerfish. I love this little story about she doesn't understand why all her friends aren't picking to do their research on the anglerfish and we did a bunch of different things with this book. The activity that we did in Wixie was a huge range of them.
We drew the anglerfish. We typed facts about the anglerfish. There's a bunch of facts in the book and I didn't put the movie in here but this is actually this bottom one.
The little clownfish actually is swimming in a circle and staying away from the fish. That's why it says bye bye so he doesn't get eaten by the fish. So the older kids made theirs into an animation using the new animation tools and some of the classes made them into their own talkies.
So they drew the line at their mouth and made them talk to tell their fact about them and then the younger kids just added the used their voice to type their sentence. Alma and how she got her name. This is another one I start the year with when they introduce themselves and introduce their names and just use the drawing tool to draw their name and they can animate it tell how they got it.
These are a couple examples. I thought this kid was so creative. He did his with all things he likes playing video games.
He likes math. I think this was a cheeseburger. I'm not sure if this video will come through.
I'll try to play it. There you go. She animated her name so it's dancing and that was before the new animation update this year.
That was from a couple years ago. Nerdy birdie tweets we use with digital citizenship and I make one whole book with each kid has their own page in the book with their name at the top and then everybody goes in and writes one kind thing on every page about each student and then at the end I print them off and everybody has their all the night their nice comments from their classmates in it and I did this in fifth grade just a couple weeks ago when our fifth graders are getting a little rambunctious towards the end of the year and needed to have a little niceness class so it the how kids were at the beginning getting a class to how they were at the end was a really nice change. Penguin huddle this was such a cute book.
They're playing all day long and then it talks about how penguins huddle up at night and the penguins all get stuck together and we talked about perspective and how the penguins were all looking in. This was incredibly hard for some of the younger kids even though the picture at the front of the book was all was like that it was really hard for some of the kids to draw that way. They wanted to draw the penguin standing up and walking across the screen like that but they had them all huddled together and then in the story the one penguin has a hat on so they a lot of kids added that but we talked about adding the snow how the different options you could use the spray paint tool and add snow that way the different ways that you could draw the eyes and the nose and how to add those details in with the different tools in Wixie.
Three Billy Goats Bueno is just a bilingual twist to Three Billy Goats Gruff and we did two things we did a Wixie activity and then we also did a makerspace activity so these are kindergarten drawings of the story which I love from the beginning of the year till towards the end of the year when they have gotten down the mouse they can actually start to draw and things actually look like what they're supposed to and then we did they had to build a bridge for the little Billy the goats get across. Bear is a Bear is a little story about a girl who has her childhood bear and she takes it everywhere with her then when she goes to college she finally puts the bear away gets the bear out back out when she has a little girl and students love this activity I thought they might especially the older ones might be a little bit embarrassed to tell about their favorite stuffy they loved it they everybody was like this is my favorite stuffy I have a and they would tell it about all their favorite animals. Chester Vanshine forgot how to rhyme it's a rhyming silly story.
I found some pictures online for the kids and we have to give a survey in our school so I did this when I had to do the survey I just read it to the older kids and then the younger kids did this these pages they had to find the rhyming words in the picture and circle them and then I and Milo imagines the world is a story just about he's sitting on the subway where we're I'm in the middle of Nebraska we don't have subways so I played a like we listened to what it sounds to write what it's like to ride on the subway and then students I have a drawing here because I couldn't find I was looking through all their old wixie drawings because we did this a couple years ago but they drew onomatopoeias because in the story that goes along with the story not a box I love this activity I use the assign tool in in wixie and I just draw a box or they do have the option if they want to draw their own box but I assign them a box I don't lock it down so that they can make it bigger or smaller and these are some of the activities I love to see what they can create out of a box but we had a surprise birthday cake here a dinosaur or a yeah dinosaur's chair making s'mores and a gum box I think everybody a lot of people know the great turkey race great to do at Thanksgiving again I use the assign tool I assign the turkey and then students come up with what he should dress up as so he doesn't become the Thanksgiving dinner and they always have lots of good ideas I do talk about I love like the spongebob one right here where they use the different line tools so that you can still see the turkey through that we talk about how it's visually more interesting to not completely cover up turkey and so I like how they used those bathe the cat grandma and grandpa are coming over and they have to clean up the house and they had to draw a cat doing something that would be ridiculous for a cat to do so we have a cat watching msa while putting on skin care and a cat stargazing eating takis and ice cream and I usually have a one or two sticker rule and so they have to draw some they have they can use some stickers something's wrong a bear hair and some underwear and if this is a story Jeff goes Jeff the bear goes out he just feels like something's wrong all day and everybody's laughing that he has his underwear on and his best friend makes him feel better by putting his underwear on and then everything's okay and that's really cool to do so then all the animals in the forest put their underwear on and so I assigned a blank pair of underwear and everybody designed underwear and some of these were hilarious the little late what they put on them the little kids had a blast with this not yeti is a story uh about a yeti he likes to bake banana bread and he doesn't like to be mean and scary like uh the stereotypical yeti so they were to draw yeti doing something kind and type what the monster was doing we have a yeti that made pizza yeti gardening and planting flowers and they could use one sticker night owl little night it has the ability to stay awake all night and he helped save the kingdom from the dragons who keep eating the nights and they were to draw the night owl and he turned out fabulous time for bed old house um the little kids this is a great one first time they're having a sleepover and we talked about with the onomatopoeia and they used um if they could they were used that they had to draw about a nighttime scene so he this one drove the stars come out at night we also talked about the copy and paste tool shay bob he made uh a restaurant in his nose he wanted to eat the birds so he became one with the birds but then he became friends with the birds so they had to draw the best nest they could find that was the nest in the story that i shared with them and then they made their own nest and norman didn't do it yes he did this is such a cute story he gets very jealous with his best friend who's a tree another tree pops up near him and he gets very jealous of the tree and digs it up so he had they told about their best friend oh that was in the wrong spot um it came in the mail this was a blast of a story i just happened to order this as a new book and it came in i immediately did a lesson with it he uh this little boy starts getting all kinds of mail and so kids had to put what they would like to get in the mail and this was when the new animation tool came out and kids i should have put videos in here but i didn't know how many videos if it would get too full big and full but they had some of the cutest things like come out of the mailbox and move around the screen a lot of money animals pet bird they turned out really cute dinosaurs go extinct it's a book about like rules and manners you should follow but the dad tells him like the dinosaur didn't look good ways and across the street that's why he's extinct so students had to um research the real reason about those dinosaurs i made i can and i can i'll share this when i'm done but um on this link you'll get i copied i scanned in parts of the book the pictures of the book and i put it all in one thing so i put each dinosaur on a different page i assigned it to the each the entire class so it was a group project one of the isty standards is um working together on a project so um they were it was a little challenging because they like to sabotage each other's work in some classes but they all were assigned one dinosaur and then um the natural history museum has a great website about the dinosaurs and they would go to that website to research their dinosaur and then they had to put the real facts like it didn't look it wasn't because it didn't look both ways crossing the street this is what really happened to that dinosaur and they put research about all their dinosaurs in there and that turned out really good every dog in the neighborhood um he wants the boy wants a dog and his grandma they go visit all the dogs in the neighborhood and grandma's doing something the whole book and you figure out she's making a dog park so the kids got to design their own dog park in wixie and they talked about like what would dogs want and what would be important to have in a dog park and we have a one of our character projects at our school is a little free library so i love that both of these pictures had little free libraries at them agatha may and i had this on there didn't i i think there's that got out of order back in order oh maybe not agatha made an anglerfish she loves the facts about the fish um i had a little kindergartner um win our state technology contest with her project for this she animated her anglerfish and um said the facts about it it turned out really cute my parents won't stop talking um cute book about parents who keep stopping on the way to the park and talking i use this with kindergartners there was a word search i found online and this maze and my kindergartners some of them still struggle with pushing the button on the mouse and moving it with the same hand so this was really good practice for that and i just put them in wixie and locked them to the and assigned it and that's that's all my ideas i think that was 40 books and i can i think i have let me see i can share it there's the link to the presentation so everybody can have it and i try to continually add to there just as a place for me to keep all my ideas these are i over the last two or three years so thank you
